Thank you!
I want to start by thanking every single one of you who showed up to vote in todayโs budget referendum. We had ๐,๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ cast a ballotโ๐๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐% ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ set by the Town Charter. This is a strong show of civic engagement and a sign that the people of Bloomfield are paying attention.
Unfortunately, due to ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง a in the Charter, the budget was not overturnedโeven though ๐๐% ๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐.
Hereโs why:
(15,305 total voters) to participate for the referendum to count. But it also states that ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐ ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐๐ซโ๐,๐๐๐ ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐โ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ โ๐๐โ in order to reject the budget. While we had strong turnout and overwhelming opposition, ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ญ of that second requirement.
Itโs unreasonable and undemocratic to say that both the participation threshold and the actual โNOโ votes must reach the same number. That is not how democratic accountability is supposed to work. Itโs time to revisit this language in the Charter and fix what is clearly a flawed process.
But thatโs not the only concern from today.
โข ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ซ was seen at a ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง during active voting hours, asking poll workers if they felt safe. While that might sound harmless, ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ , especially during a budget referendum tied to his administration.
The Town Manager has no ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ, and should not be anywhere near the counting or handling of results. This crosses serious ethical lines and deserves scrutiny.
โข There were also reports that ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ก๐จ๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฆ-๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐จ๐๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ย of results. This is completely unacceptable. I understand Councilman Mahon recorded video, and I hope that footage will be made public.

Weโre not done.
This election revealed not just problems with the Charter language but larger issues about transparency, ethics, and boundaries at Town Hall. This is why the November election is critical. We need a clean slate, real balance, and leaders who understand the boundaries between politics and process.
To the residents who stepped up today: your voice matters. Weโre awake now, and weโre not going back to sleep.
More to come.
